Back From The Beach

Hey all, back from my grandmother's 90th birthday celebration in Hilton Head, we had a great time with her, and she's doing terrific! Also saw some family I hadn't seen since I was a little kid, jumped in some huge waves at the beach with my wife and brother, stayed in a great condo, ate some excellent seafood and barbeque, saw 3 alligators and  bunches of ibis along a hiking trail, and learned that when you get a bunch of old people together they can drink a ton!

Eating was a mixed bag, some meals were fairly healthy while others I didn't even attempt to hold back. One day we tried to find a no frills seafood place. If you have ever been to Hilton Head, then you know there aren't many hole-in-the-walls, but we found one called the Sea Shack and the food was awesome. It was clear from the start that it was kind of "soup nazi" environment where you are expected to know what you want to order when you reach the front of the line or face their wrath. So after a bit of waiting we get up there and wife tells me to order whatever I think will is best. So I start naming stuff off, and sure enough she starts shooting me quizzical disagreeing looks. So I start changing things around and the order taker starts huffing and puffing a bit and even goes as far as to rip up the paper with the original order on it. At least we don't live there, so if they had banished me (No Soup for You, One Year) it would have been OK! We eventually got our food though, the prices were very reasonable, and it was well worth the soup nazi hassle. We will definitely be back to the shack.

One other good thing, most activities at Hilton Head are outside and involve lots of walking so I did plenty of that, even hit 23,000+ pedometer steps one of the days. I got on the scale this morning and weighed the same as the day I left, so I grade the trip an A for taking a vacation without a weight gain. I wasn't ready to go back to work and start being responsible again, but I have missed you guys and look forward to catching up with everyone. Take care for tonight!

  1. I am casually reaching down and pulling my shorts out of the crevice of my thighs. It's not the easiest thing to do while on this machine. I am trying to adjust my stride, my speed, all sorts of things so these damn things don't ride up on me. I'm no longer being subtle now. I can't go the pace I want to go because I keep having to stop and adjust the shorts. I know I'm gonna be some water cooler joke somewhere because I almost fell one time trying to rescue them from the thighs. Finally, I got the pace down to 48-55 strides per minute and the feet positioned in the right place and was holding my head in the right position. The riding stopped. Yahoo! So I'm a little disappointed with this slower pace. It's not what I'm used to doing. I figured that I would increase my level from the 5 I normally go to 14 which is as high as it would go. I think, in the world of ellipticals, this would be knee-breaking, but my machine is super duper easy and even the level 14 doesn't kill me like the level 3 does on some other ones. I love that machine, though. I can do a quicker pace and really feel like I'm accomplishing something since my muscles don't feel like they are going to burn through my skin like acid the instant I get started. This machine actually lets me move a little bit before that kicks in.

  4. OMG I can't believe you didn't tell me you were going to HHI!!! Dwayne and I have been several times, but since we have Scarlette now, we had to go to Panama City Beach last year, because HHI doesn't allow pets in their oceanfront condos. WE LOVE SEA SHACK!!!! Great prices, great food, great portion sizes (unless you're trying to lose weight, lol). Also, have you been to Steamers in Coligny Plaza? OMG you have to go the nxt time you're on the island. They have the BEST grilled shrimp and scallops I've ever had in my entire life. I am so serious....they're seafood dip on the appetizer menu is good, too....but you MUST try the grilled shrimp and scallops!! I just posted a bunch of beach pics last night, check them out!
